The Mamutik Episode

I got my Open Water Diver license in 2005. The underwater world fascinates me so but somehow through lack of planning and perseverance, I've only managed to dive only twice since then.
So, in an effort to revive this interest, I've decided to go to Mamutik Island for a fun dive, tomorrow.
I am almost ashamed of myself. A self-confessed water-baby and I don't make the effort to do justice to this title?
Oooo.. tomorrow's going to be interesting!

This is a copied image from the net. Mamutik Island, smallest of all 5 Tunku Abdul Rahman Park Islands, and the nearest to the mainland as well.

'Tis done, 'tis over
my own, outdoor language camp
relief..can smile now.

Not much of a Haiku eh?

The English language camp is over. Years of talk of actually doing one finally came to fruition on Friday. The committee helped make this camp a reality. But kudos really go to Kala for doing the paper chase. Sending the letters, doing follow ups, rounding up the participants..
I do realise that having connection with the Kem helped. Since I was so much familiar with the workings in the Kem, I had no trouble at all organizing the outdoor activities. Being a friend of the caterer was a double bonus. Food was commendable, not at complaint at all from the participants as well as the teachers. Compliments are due to the cooks, and the boss was very generous with the portions too. Ah...bliss..
Small bumps and grinds along the way were easily rectified...(if it weren't pun, kasi boleh saja!)
Out of the 50 selected participants, we finally set off to camp at 2.30pm with just 43. It was slightly drizzling during the drive up to Kiulu. Dyah called me on my cell asking me were I was and prepared me on the possibility of the students setting up tents under the canopy. But I had a good feeling, after sending a quiet prayer for a good weekend, that the weekend would be ours to keep.
About one hour later, the bus and van carrying all participants and some teachers reached Kem. I drove, bringing with me some equipments/stationery and two upper six girls as urusetia. Another school was still in the main hall, not finished yet with their program. Not to worry.. I instructed the students to take all their belongings and go to the rest huts which were along the fences.
The drizzle had cleared up by then. The students of the other school had proceeded to the main field for the flag down ceremony. So I had my students move into the hall. I also formally introduced myself as the Camp Commandant. As I was giving the camp briefing, the drizzle resumed. Poor SMK Tun Said students got showered. Thank goodness it wasn't a downpour. My boys and girls were given their color coded name tags (name and group name printed) and based on their tags, they swiftly moved into their own group.
Next was the Craft Camp. Sites were allocated, tents were handed out and participants worked together to put up their tents. Jafora was there to hand out the tents. I handled the camp craft. I guess the students enjoyed themselves.
Too many details to write here and not enough time..
They regrouped in the main hall after tents were pitched. Each were handed a file which contained a log book, a few pieces of foolscap papers and a pen. I emphasised each of the rules mentioned.
Anyways...a few highlights..
There was Night Walk on the first night. Language activity was about descriptive writing, finding words to describe what they would feel, see, hear during the walk. There was also focus on the element of prediction here. I also briefed them about some safety precautions..mentioning especially the spiritual aspect of it. Better be safe than sorry.
The walk was of course supervised by some trainers in Kem. Without them, this walk would not have been possible. Most of the students had never done this kind of walk at night and I bet the walk through the villages, being growled and barked at by sentry dogs, walking on suspension bridges, through muddy paddy fields, walking pass dark orchards, to name a few, will be a walk to remember. About one hour later, they returned to the campsite tired but being teens, still talkative.
The next day, I also handled the Flying Fox. Did I feel nervous giving the briefing? I guess not. I only hoped I had covered enough necessary information. My other fellow trainers had decided to just let me do the briefing since it was to be done fully in English. So, while they were stationed on the tower and as brakers, I was on the ground level, doing the safety briefings, giving demos on proper gears and putting the lanyard + tandems for participants before going up the tower. Students were mostly excited. A few cried out of fear but all, including later some teachers, went down. I was the last to go down, but I brought along with me a passenger. Bethany, Florah's 10 year old daughter, had gotten a case of the fright just before take-off and adamantly refused to go down. When I reached the top, I casually told her I'd bring her along so that we could go down together. That made her so happy she agreed. So, we were strapped together when we descended the cable. Hurrah..
After this activity ended, I could then breathe a bit. My share of acvities were more of outdoor type. I had left the other language activities for my other colleagues.
Let's see, there was Haiku, HAM Radio, Cooperative games and the managing of the English Night.
I felt relatively well until after lunch. My back started to hurt more than usual. I had pulled a back muscle two weeks ago during a course in Kem. It had hurt a bit when I did certain movements like bending down and I guess (on looking back) did not make time for it to heal. I was so in pain that I decided to go for a lie down at the office sofa. I had taken some panadols a few minutes earlier and I immediately fell asleep seconds after lying down on the sofa. Gosh! I'd never done this before.
I managed to get some rest, felt a bit better, and later rejoined my colleagues and the participants in their activities. I'm glad they were there to conduct the activities.
I enjoyed the students' performances immensely. I laughed so much at their antiques. I was quite amused at how they poked fun at whatever activities that they had gone through and made them into short sketches. I was more amused when I heard a lot of myself incorporated into their dialogues. It showed that at least they were paying attention.
The closing ceremony was done this morning. I think it was the briefest of ceremony ever conducted. The speeches was short and not long-winded. Our VIP? Only among ourselves, the Ketua Bidang only. Wah.. I think it was only about half an hour! Full protocol, speech from students' rep, certs give-away, officiating of closing ceremony, giving of token of appreciation, and that's it. Hahah...my camp, my style.
And then there was group photo. As I sat on the chair with the hullabaloo of boys and girls around, it occured to me..this was my camp. My brain-child, coming to a close. It was all so surreal.
After lunch, the participants went to put away their belongings inside the bus. Before going off, they were allowed a short visit to see the river and play with the water for a while. Water activities was a no-no for them since we had direct orders from the school admin not to do any water activities.
By 1pm everybody had gone back. As I brought my car out from the compound of Kem, up the slope and turned into the main road back to home, I finally allowed myself to laugh and whoop in relief. It is over. It's done. Time to go home.

And it didn't rain...not a-tall. (yea..it showered..but not enough to do any dent in the activities).

movie fever.

Two and three quarters of an hour of Cathay Cineplex Avatar. The Na'vis noses certainly made them look equine..very interesting.. n Ms.Sigourney Weaver being there was almost perfect..being the gran dame of Sci-fi movies.. no-nonsense air about her.. love the scene where she demands for her cig the moment she wakes up from her Avatar ventures.
Asked a few friends to come along but only the Guitarman prevailed. Thanks for the company, you.
It has been a while since I last saw a movie. I think it was with Rachel n kids I went out for a movie last. Can't remember the title. I feel like watching sherlock holmes.. no time yet. I think i'm going to look forward to more movies coming this February.. something about some teens and them being demigods.. offsprings of Poseidon and other Greek Gods.. interesting..

Movie aside,I am puzzled.. my cough has subsided... but the annoying cough has been swiftly replaced by this flu n fever... it comes and goes.. i shall try to muster the strength to banish them away..

Jojet kinabalu

i've woken up 4 times since 6.30am to the intermittent beep of my mobile phone alarm sytem. i wearily opened up my eyes, located the insistent beeping, pressed the snooze button, and slipped into unconsciousness again.. and again..
Still weary. the last two days of intensive dance practice for the MSKPM are quite something.. Tari rampai, jojet (as the term affectionately? used by the other pro daoncers).
Me? just very amateur, keep forgetting the steps or ragam as it is termed.
tonight's the first performance..tomorrow's the climax.
But i must admit, it's a different kind of bliss to be able to dance in sync with music IN a team..knowing which way to sway and turn.. So..this is what it feels like...
Off to practice..

check

What a week-end.
juggled two events.
geographically spaced..not too distant la.. and the driving doesn't bother me, 'cept that when your mind and body is quite tired , taxed..
the end year dinner..going on duty as an R.O. during this Climbathon this year..driving can be dangerous. (nodding off and veering off course...)
Dinner at Putera Ballroom.. duty at National Park.
One of them is worth more than the other but the less worthy needed my attendance..
This would have been a good time for a ..aiyah..what's that thingamajig..oh..for me to say "Beam me up, Scotty" and whisk me to point B from A and vice-versa.

Sarawak Challenge 2009

Sarawak Challenge came and went. The whole experience decided my level of fitness..which was.. not that fit. *koff koff*.. A long soft slope up Canada Hill going towards Grand Old Lady in Miri was not a soft slope for me. *curses*
Anyway.. there were 15 reps from Sabah this time. 10 men, 5 women (me included). Venue : Kolej Tuanku Hj Bujang, Miri. Duration : 2nd - 9th Oct.
The last time I participated this Cabaran was 2 years ago in Selangor.
Lemme see... this time, there was Kayak, Bicycling, abseil, gadjet-making, survival skills (which seemed more like kiasu old ladies pitching their cookings skills against other kiasu old ladies).. flying fox, parrallel crossing, visit to the Niah Cave, durian eating competition (ahahah..not. but we did go out to town to hunt for durians which were sold abundant and cheap).
Enjoyed the cycling, loved the kayak crashing waves, was thrilled by the almost 4 storeys high rappel descent..( the rope was damp on some length and the gloves didn't grip as tightly as it should..something coulda gone wrong!)
I didn't lobby for this - as some have - but strangely I did feel like I was going to get chosen for this.

Glut

Visited the Lok Kawi Ramadhan Stalls. A lot of authentic semenanjung cuisines here. Why do I say authentic? Most of the sellers are the wives of army staff (mostly not from around east malaysia) who are very much skilled in cooking the food they are most familiar with. Food, food and more food...

I love this! Blue rice..a quartered salted duck egg..some dessicated coconut..finely shredded cabbage, bunga kantan and long beans (raw)..batter-coated fried fish..and this thingy inside the chilli..chilli n prawn paste..delicious curry-like sauce.

Khloe@Unyuk

New member of the house. Introducing Khloe @Unyuk. Such a cute name for such a cute being. Mum got her from a friend. Supposed to be of the Siamese breed, she has such a darling endearing quality about her.
Friday late afternoon when I went back to my parents' nest, I immediately searched for her only to discover she wasn't around. When I asked Gareth where the cat was, he said he didn't know and had been looking for her all day since morning. A tiny mewling she was, I wasn't worried about what catastophe might have befallen her.
I started looking in the pantry where her food, water and kitty litter were. So, I mewed around and listened to any reply. Nope, wasn't there. Mewed in my room. Nope, no reply. Went to Gareth/Sis room. Mewed some more..and heard an indistinct reply from the next room. Mum's room. Ahah.. Went over to mum's room and mewed softly and was rewarded with a mournful mewling sound. Uummm.... it sounded muffled and hidden. I wanted to smile.. and headed to one of the closet. I opened the closet door and when I didn't see her inside I meowed a little more. Still I heard the muffled meow. I opened the door to the other closet and saw little Unyuk sitting patiently inside. Poor kitty trapped all day inside!! Oyoo...

Going the distance

Welly welly welly...
Tis 2009...
Had staff meet today...
3 major posts for me...
PIBG treasurer, Penyelaras Ting 4 n Penyelaras Unit Uniform...
Sigh...

On top of that..
I'm assigned a class of Lower 6...
Now this one's going to be interesting...

Aside from that..
Bought myself a new pair of running shoes on the last day of 2008..

I used to run when I was studying back in U. And my first pair of running shoes was of the Mizuno brand. They were good running shoes. And they were blue and white combi color. After a few years, when the sides and soles gave up, I had them stiched but having them stiched made the size shrink. So, running wasn't as comfortable... and made me leave running...(not exactly the true reason la..heheh)

My second running shoes were a pair of Nike. Red and white. I thought... now this would jumpstart my running passion. Uh...negative.... They looked good on my kaki though. A few weeks ago, while doing some light jogging while doing the morning exercise at Kem, I felt this flapping sensation while jogging. I looked down, lo and behold...aiya... the soles of the shoes had started to open up a little. A few days ago, I sent them for stiching... and so the story goes..di da di..didadidadidadi...

My newest running shoes... Adidas.. Dark grey and yellow... I had made a check on the Adidas stores around town and a few pairs had jumped out of their way to wave to me to say..Buy me!! I really loved this white and yellow combi... Unfortunately they didn't have my size! A red pair of Adidas said coyly..."U can buy me...".. Had to turn him down so.. Way out of my budget... So, I settled on this smiling pair of GreyYellow... Babe, I'm taking you home...

So, going the distance for work..
And going the distance for my running...
Wish me luck!

Kayak Star 2

The Kayak Star 2 course was held from the 3rd to the 6th especially for the trainers
of the Sabah Co-curricullumCentre . The venue for the course was the Lagoon Park, Karambunai . The Kayak trainers were Mr. Mohd Fadhil
and Mr. Agku Azanul aka Aweng.
By the end of the 4 days training, all of us 16 Star 2 and 8 Star 1 participants had
sore muscles and faces like burnt shrimps or udangs.
The Lagoon Park was a good venue for the course, in my opinion. The sea/water current wasn't that strong, which made it quite an ideal place to learn and practice the various sweeps and strokes, half rolls and full rolls... and there was plenty space on land for putting up tents/camps.

Some of the tents..
